Iliana, glad you liked it. Read the whole Emerson essay sometime if you can. It is full of quotables.

I really enjoyed reading this Stefanie. I'm taking note of those Emerson quotes to put in my journal.

Dorothy, the Emerson/Whitman story is a neat one. Emerson was floored when he read Leaves of Grass as it was first published. You are right though, it is interesting to consider other poets that could fit in to his idea of poet as well.

Oh Litlove, you make me laugh! That meeting would definitely not be a good one!

John, Emerson and Whitman did indeed meet, many times in fact. They became great friends. Emerson delivered his lecture several years before Whitman published anything. It just so happens Whitman was in the audience of that lecture and was very inspired by it.

Kelly, Emerson gives good advice, yes? :)

I've always tried to followed Emerson's "write what you know" edict.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Whitman and Emerson meet? If so, when did that happen in relation to this essay? Could it have been what he had found, rather than what he was looking for?
