I agree entirely about it being the type of book where the train is heading in the direction of the main character blowing its whistle and still he refuses to get off the track.

What I found most frustrating though was the ending. I expected some passage, to tell us that he actually did die of alchohol poisoning, or had some final meeting with Eck, who was the character I felt had the potential to pop up again.

Hamlet has that the scene where with all the bodies scattered on the ground, another character contenplates what has happened, Lolita ends with a mock psychiatric report on the death of the main character, this book needed some kind of ending.

It's a wonderful & a terrible book. My brother was an alcoholic and so much of it reminds me of him.
Alcoholism, or pehaps addiction of any kind, 'eats everything'. Wilberforce betrays, or at any rate is indifferent to the feelings of, all his friends and even his wife although he truly loves her.
It's a story about addiciton, about self-acception addition set against the beauty of wine culture and the English countryside.

I'd seen this one somewhere or heard something about it but your review puts things in a whole new light. If its really well written I think I would enjoy it, depressing subject matter and all.

I'd not heard of this book before, but I'm sort of intrigued now that I've read your review. Can you imagine spending that much money on a bottle of wine? I guess he got his money's worth and more.
