A few minutes ago I was skimming through my weekly American Library Association email newsletter and I see this headline:
Mean Librarian Salaries up 2% in 2008
And I thought, “why do mean librarians earn more money?” I was a few headlines down the page before I realized, that it wasn’t mean librarians but mean as in mathematical mean referring to salaries.
You are all free to laugh at me.

Heh. That’s pretty funny. Maybe they get a raise for collecting more fines?
2% eh? I suppose that’s better than zero. Are you allowed to put out tip jars?
Well I for one am laughing at you.
First “Out” Canadians, now “Mean” Librarians.
I think it’s the universe telling you to take a break.
Not lauging at you. Laughing with you.
On the evening of December 31st, 1999, just before I was getting ready to go to the festivities, I glanced at the paper and saw T. REX FOUND IN ARIZONA. I thought it was such a lovely and perfect ending to the 20th century: on the last day of the century, we discover a Tyrannosaurus Rex stomping around out in the desert.
But it was a T. Rex SKELETON, of course. My girlfriend, interestingly enough, had seen the same story in a different paper that same day. This one read T. REX SKELETON FOUND IN ARIZONA, and she worriedly scanned the article because she thought they’d discovered the remains of a mysteriously deceased glam rocker. (Seriously.)
My coworker has a tube of ‘fast absorbing’ lotion on her desk and every morning I think it says, “foot absorbing” lotion… and every morning, I wonder what the heck that could mean.
I wonder if your mean librarian that you volunteer for has gotten his 2% raise?
LOL–I think you should send it in to Leno’s Monday night headlines thing.
That’s definitely bad headline writing. Or a very bored sub-editor with librarian issues.
Oh, but I bet mean librarians do get more money…;-)
Hey, a 2 per cent raise is nothing to sneeze at in the library world!
So Mean Mike got a raise and all the nice librarians didn’t?
Working with that guy might have influenced your original take on that title.
I thought exactly the same thing you did. Maybe you’ve been writing about and I’ve been reading about Mike the Librarian too much?
I can tell you this: mean teachers and nice teachers get paid the same–and it ain’t a lot!
The squeaky wheel gets the grease, including ‘mean’ librarians?
2% doesn’t seem like much, does it. I guess it’s better than being down by 2%. When you said mean I automatically thought of the mean librarian you have to deal with, too!
It’s having to work with the loathsome Mike that does it! The association is always there, ready and willing…..
Sylvia, yeah, maybe it’s because they collect more fines. A tip jar at the reference desk, not a bad idea!
Thanks sis, I knew I could count on you!
Dark Orpheus, I’m either being told to ake a break or slow down and read more carefully
Johnny, excellent story!
Daphne, that’s good. What’s even better is that you do it nearly every morning
I doubt my mean librarian got a raise, the library system here is having budget problems again. Maybe that explains Mike’s meanness?
Jena, tempting…
Maggie, the actual headline on the article is fine, whoever wrote the headline for the link in the e-newsletter must have need another cup of coffee.
Verbivore, I guess I am doomed to a bottom of the barrel salary
Bonnie, I know. I work for a non-library nonprofit and a 2% raise is considered very good.
Bookchase, you may be right about that.
Emily, I think you an Sam are on to something.
JD, good to know the world of teachers is fair. Too bad they don’t earn what they deserve.
Paul, heh, could be right on that one.
Danielle, 2% doesn’t seem like much. Why couldn’t I have wanted to work at something with a high salary?
Litlove, maybe it is a sign like Dark Orpheus suggests. Time to find a new volunteer opportunity away from mean librarian Mike. Hmmm…
haha! I did the same thing when I read it, too. Funny stuff.
We are laughing with you
That was just too cute.
