I’ve peppered this blog with stories from my volunteer shift at the public library welcome desk for nearly the last year and a half. The hours I spend there every other Saturday morning have been fun but of late have become a chore. When I started looking at the clock and counting down the minutes until my shift was over, I began to think that maybe it was time to be done. And so it is. This last Saturday was my last day. Blessedly, my nemesis was not there. It was a good day, if dull, and I am glad to go out on an up note. Are you sorry to hear that there will be no more stories of Librarian Mike?
I am not done volunteering though, I have just switched venues. I will be volunteering for the Internet Public Library. I’ve just begun the process so it isn’t official yet, but I will be answering reference questions as a volunteer. I am also looking into doing volunteer work in the IPL’s digital collections as well. I’m not sure I am allowed to do both. If I am not, I will just answer questions. It will be great and practical practice. And the IPL writes reference letters.
I am a little sad to not be at the downtown library any longer if for no other reason than the people-watching value is very high. But, when it comes to choosing between a volunteer position that limits me to directing people to the bathroom and helping them sign up for a library card and a position that allows me to actually answer reference questions, well it’s a no-brainer. So no more stories of mean Mike, or exploding bowels, or mentally ill people verbally abusing trees. Who knows though, maybe the IPL has its own ecosystem of the weird and whacky. I’ll be sure to let you know.
Best wishes on your new position. Reading between the lines it sounds like you had a good thing going that was ruined by one particular person and that is a real shame. My wife works in a library. I don’t know what it is with library staff…a significant percentage of them are sure a mess. I cannot imagine why a position that should embrace a love of books and a love of knowledge would attract such a group of contemptible people. Very odd.
Bring on the weird and wacky questions!
Sounds like this is a good move – and one which will be much better experience for your superstar librarian training. I’m with Sylvia – crossing my fingers that the IPL provides just as much weird and wacky
That sounds great! Enjoy the new position — I’m sure you’ll learn lots, as well as meeting important people who can write letters!
Oh poop, I really wanted to hear at least one more exploding bowel story.
Congrats on your new position!
Well, I’ll certainly miss your Tales of the Library but I’m sure you won’t miss putting up with that putz! It sounds like a fun new position, regardless!
Sounds like a great decision, Stefanie. It can be hard to knowwhen the time has come to make a change – I am impressed you recognized yours and recitified the situation. I’ll miss the Mike posts a teeny bit but I know you’ll have great new stories for us!
Yay! No more horrible Mike! I do hope you mentioned to someone important before you left how ghastly he is. It would be only right and proper to do so. But change is good, and developmental and always interesting. I’m sure that whatever happens at the IPL it will provide a good source of anecdotes and some fun and brainwork for you.
I think it sounds great that you are moving on to more challenging projects! You’re talents were definitely wasted there and very much underappreciated! I think the IPL sounds like it will be fun actually and you won’t have the pressure of having the patron stare at you over the ref desk! Did they at least give you an honorary mug for your volunteer services??
I’m fairly certain that there are weird and whacky people everywhere but hopefully you won’t have to deal with the controlling and annoying as much. Did Mike drive you out? Sad but the new position sounds like a better fit, or at least a nice change of pace.
Oh I bet you’ll find more wacky and weird stories for us – let’s just hope they are all questions and no actual weird and wacky people!
Good luck at your new volunteering gig. I bet it will be great!
Goodbye Mike! Hello IPL virtual reference desk!
Mike, we hardly knew you…RIP.
Best of luck on your next volunteering gig. I’m sure that ol’ Mike is terribly upset that he missed your last day.
When I read your post title I actually thought that Mike had quit his job
Anyway this change looks promising… enjoy it!
Thanks everyone. I won’t miss Mike but I will miss some of the other people. Doesn’t mean I can’t visit!
