Estelle, blistering, I like that description.

Daphne, it is an intense book but it isn't depressing if that helps at all.

Dorothy, good question. I can't speak for the author of course, but I wonder if he gave Les a voice so he could have a chance to explain himself, a chance to present his side of the story?

Lisa, and thank you. the book is fairly new and I hope will manage to get some attention.

Verbivore, I think you've hit the nail on the head when you say that the same technique in Living to Tell made the character seem mythic. It does the same here. Perhaps putting his voice at the end is a way to bring the character back from the mythic to the real?

Marrigold, can I just say I love your name? Act three is really beautiful and moving. I hope you get your hands on the book and enjoy it!

Carrie, yes Les was quite consequent to his friends. And it is an emotional book.

Litlove, it's recently out from New Directions Press. Don't know if it has made it to the UK yet. I hope it does.

Wow - this sounds amazing. And I'm with Dorothy and verbivore in finding the lack of a voice for Les an intriguing phenomenon. I wonder whether this is available in the UK?

Les sounds quite 'consequent'. I think I'll skip it, although it does sounds like it packs a heck of an emotional punch. Probably exactly for that reason.
