I know the VP debate isn’t until later tonight (no party this time) but I have homework to do so I will keep this short.
You may be wondering how the stats class is going. So far so good. Nothing terribly mind-bending or more complicated than basic math. Remembering the formulas is going to be a challenge though. The hard part is the vocabulary and keeping all of it straight. Doesn’t mean I’m zipping through the calculations though. I’ve never been fast at math and it hasn’t changed. I am slow and deliberate to make sure I get it right.
But what a bad librarian in training I am. Here it is Thursday already and I haven’t even mentioned that it is Banned Books Week! There is a good post up at Everybody’s Libraries on Why Banned Books Week Matters. Maybe next year I will be able to get my act together good enough have proper banned books posts all week.
Have you seen me? This cute 300-pound statue that was bolted and cemented to the ground outside Commack Public Library (New York), was stolen! And it isn’t just any statue. It was a tribute to 19 year-old Shana Kay who died suddenly in 2005 from viral encephalitis. If you know anything about the theft, call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
And a shout out to Canadians celebrating Canadian Library Month. Libraries are great places, eh?
I don’t suppose I should, but I cannot help but admire the thief who made off with that statue. Didn’t exactly slip it into a coat pocket, did s/he? Reminds me of when I became a fellow at a Cambridge college and the first circular note I received admitted that a grand piano had been ‘lost’ and would anyone with any knowledge of its whereabouts please step forward. Amazing.
I didn’t know it was Canadian Library Month! *blush* Thanks for the tip!
I meant to read a banned book this week but just haven’t had time – I promise to make up for it in October with two!
I live near the Commack library, so I’ve seen that statue a dozen times – how sad that someone would be so cold about such a lovely tribute to a young girl.
That statue is wonderful. How could someone do that? Grrr…
Glad to hear your class is going well! Did you watch the debate? All I have to say is that the word “Maverick” should be taken out of the dictionary! I cannot stand to hear that word anymore.
I’m glad to hear your stats class is going well! And who would steal that statue!? That boggles my mind. I suppose like Litlove I can admire their ingenuity, but the motive baffles me.
Dorothy, the motive is probably the value of the bronze. There have been a number of thefts here of statues and plaques, even from graveyards, to be sold as scrap and melted down. I hope this statue is recovered before it’s too late!
Oooh, yet another thing we have in common: I do math slowly and deliberately, too, and I hate to have anyone watching and trying to make me move more quickly. How sad that someone would have stolen that statue.
Litlove, you’re right, the thieves really had to work at it.
Sylvia, happy library celebrations. And you are very likely right that the statue was stolen for the metals. Though I prefer to think it is a nice ornament in someone’s garden
Verbivore, I had good intentions too.
Melanie, if the statue gets returned, be sure to let drop a line.
Iliana, “maverick” should not be allowed anymore nor should the word “fundamental.”
Dorothy, it is pretty sad when thieves get so desperate.
Emily, we would be good math companions. If someone watches me or tries to make me go faster I make big mistakes. Thus, I have always stunk when it came to the math portions of standard tests like the SAT.
