Happy Friday! This evenings plans include a ballroom dance lesson followed by a stop at Half Price Books to use the 20% off an item coupon. I am hoping they have a copy of The Recognitions by William Gaddis.
My Bookman, bless him, brought me home my very own copy of Margaret Atwood’s Payback. It’s the book version of the Massey Lectures that you can listen to online. Last year you could download them but this year they make you listen streaming over the web. Sort of annoying. I hope to have time to listen to at least one of them this weekend. But I think the lectures and book will be a good start to delving in to economics.
Do you have so many library materials checked out from one or more libraries and wish you had a little elf to help you keep track of everything and remind you when due dates were coming up? Well, you can have your very own Library Elf. Find your library or libraries on the list, create an account and Elf will do the rest. It is very cool and makes me wish I had more library stuff to keep track of so I could use it. But my public library already sends me reminder emails and lets me view my account online.
And now for some fun, a little “quiz” to help you find your place in the Dewey Decimal System. It returns three choices for you but two of my three were in the same section and I even tried various combos of first and last name and birthday and no birthday. The oddball section I got classified into was 614 Incidence & Prevention of Disease. Huh? But the one that kept coming up over and over in the various permutations I tried was 044 Unassigned so that seems like it should be the one I choose for my shelf location:
044 [Unassigned]
Class:
000 Computer Science, Information & General Works
Contains:
Encyclopedias, magazines, journals and books with quotations.
What it says about you:
You are very informative and up to date. You’re working on living in the here and now, not the past. You go through a lot of changes. When you make a decision you can be very sure of yourself, maybe even stubborn, but your friends appreciate your honesty and resolve.
Where are you shelved?
Eerie how that DOES seem to describe you, no?
I ended up as Canada in History and Geography, which wasn’t too bad. That was as Dorothy — as my other name, I was Inland Waterway and Ferry Transportation! I like Canada better
Cute. I’m 801 – Philosophy & Theory, which would in fact be one of my larger sections were I to catalog my personal library. Variations turned up 211 – Concepts of God and 168 – Argument & Persuasion, which both kind of fit too.
The Library Elf is great! My current local library system doesn’t have the same level of online service as was offered in my previous community, so this is perfect.
Ha! I got Classical Latin Grammar! That’s pretty funny because I’ve been studying it hard these last few days.
Thanks for the Massey lecture link. I missed the first few lectures and couldn’t find them online. They must have just put them up. You actually can download them if you look at the page source code, find the file names, copy them into your browser, and save.
Emily, maybe just a little
Dorothy, Canada in History and Geography is not bad at all though Inland waterway and Ferry Transportation sounds rather entertaining
Mella, very nice especially since it matches your personal library so well. Apparently our books really do say a lot about us!
Sylvia, I don’t think you could have gotten a more perfect one! Happy to provide the Massey Lecture link. And let me just say you are brilliant to suggest the source code. I never would have thought of that. Now I have the four currently available lectures saved to my computer
Hmmm. I ended up as “Other Philosophical Systems” – “Your life is complicated and difficult to explain to others”. Perhap not the bestest thing to hear first thing in the morning but I’m intrigued, it’s a great fun little quiz!
And I love the idea of Margaret Atwood on economics.
I ended up as Italian fiction (pretty good, only a few thousand miles too far East) and it said: ‘You’re a global, worldly person who wants to make a big impact with your actions. You have a lot to tell people and you’re good at making unique observations about everyday experiences. You can notice and remember details that other people think aren’t important.’ That last sentence would have my husband in fits and he would say ‘try living with that!’.
Do hope the ballroom lesson was fab and that you got a copy of the Gaddis. We must put our collective heads together and come up with a name for this blog!
maggie, your Dewey classification makes you sound very mysterious
Litlove, Italian fiction is pretty good. Your husband is a hoot! The ballroom lesson was great as always but not a single Gaddis was on the shelf. The entire county library system has only one copy and it is checked out until December 6th! I had to break down and buy a new copy. But that’s ok because it will have guaranteed empty margins in which I can scribble
I was also “Unassigned” (013) which I preferred over the other choice, 617 (Surgery!! Ugh)
Melanie, LOL, I think I would prefer unassigned to surgery too!
I got 070 – News media, journalism & publishing. How did they know I graduated with a degree in Journalism?!
Iliana, it’s creepy isn’t it?
