The pictures may be incredible (and they are), but I’m going to prefer to wait until I have an opportunity to visit each and every one of these stores in person.
I used to visit the Shakespeare and Co. all the time when I lived in Paris and I’m thrilled to see that lovely one in Lyon – that’s only two hours from me!!! But I think the one in Portugal might get me on a plane sometime soon – what a stunning building.
I need to visit Lello just to climb the staircase.
The two fellas sitting outside Shakespeare and Co. were perfect to really drive home the feeling.
I like some of the little bookstores in Teramachi, Kyoto. Very ancient tomes in old stacks, with elderly owners that eye the foreigner suspiciously, “What could he possibly want with an ancient script dictionary…”
That last photo is the most amazing. I want to know how the books stay around the doorframe? Are they old, un-salable copies that are fastened into place? Imagine what would happen if that girl actually pulled one out of the arch!
WOW!
Totally gorgeous.
I probably most want to go to Shakespeare & Co……. but the place in Buenos Aires looks like the place to be, too!
Awesome.
Thoroughly.
I love Shakespeare and co bookshop, I used to go to a writer group there once a week (before Baby S was born). Some people actually spend the night there! (the sanitation is equally antiquated… mh)
Daphne, I was so totally jealous when I realized you could visit Borderlands. Take your camera and say hi to the cat too!
Molly, I felt like I needed to move too after looking at the pictures!
Dorothy, I bet you’ve been in some pretty cool bookstores in your area. You’ve even mentioned a few on your blog that made me totally envious!
wil, I know, I love that red staircase!
Bibliobio, I would love to visit all of them too. I think we both have some vacation planning to do!
Verbivore, I suspected you had been to Shakespeare and Co. If you make it to the one in Lyon or Portugal you must promise to take lots of pictures and give all the details!
Bikkuri, isn’t the Lello store gorgeous? If you are able, take some photos of the Japanese bookstores sometime. I’d love a peep into them
Sylvia, I know. Portugal suddenly looks like very appealing country to visit!
Carrie, you and me both!
Jeane, I was wondering the same thing. I imagine they are wired together or something so no one gets buried beneath them!
Cipriano, they all have such character to them it is hard to say which one is most amazing.
Emily, let’s get on it!
Smithereens, oh I figured you had been to Shakespeare and Co like Verbivore but I didn’t think you used to go every week. That is the coolest. I think if the sanitation weren’t antiquated as you say I’d be spending the night there too if I had a chance!
Ooh, Borderlands is totally on my list of local bookstores to check out; I really need to, now!
I’ve been to the one in Helsinki… I think I thought I was at a university library.
I’ve decided that I need to move to France!
I’m totally awed! I love those pictures — beautiful.
Cool red staircase.

So, when are we going to organize the Book Blogger’s world tour?

Some great places!
I need to move — or travel more!

Em, aren’t they? Wish they were in my backyard.
Iliana, I am in total agreement.

I’ve been to the one in Buenos Aires — almost exactly a year ago. It was very neat — it is the largest bookstore in South America!
I’d love to visit all the others as well!
