Just a quickie tonight. I am behind on my schoolwork this week because when it rains it pours. My poor Bookman came home early from work Monday evening with food poisoning. We know it was food related because he was fine all day and then within an hour after eating a bean burrito with guacamole from a fast food place at the airport where he works he got bad stomach cramps. He is finally able to eat today. He was lucky, it could have been worse.
But then to add to that he had a major post injection reaction to his MS medication last night. The reaction is a side effect, not an allergy, and he has had them before but they have always been minor and he’s felt fine within 5 – 10 minutes. I’ll spare you the details but last night was close to 40 minutes of uncontrollable violent shivering, shortness of breath, and muscle spasms that no amount of blankets or hot packs could stop. Everything is fine now, but gosh am I tired.
Finally for school this week we have begun learning about css (cascading style sheets). For some reason I was expecting it to be really hard or at least complicated and after managing to get in some reading, it isn’t that difficult at all, at least for the basics. We are also supposed to be working on image and graphics editing.
And thanks to all who made a suggestion for a final website topic for me. I was very tempted by vegan desserts but since I am not the one who knows anything about them except how to eat and enjoy them, I decided not to go with that because I can’t make my Bookman write content for me. Well I could I suppose but he could threaten to withhold chocolate chip cookies or scones or something and I would cave in to his demands. Lacking leverage, I went for a site on surviving winter in Minnesota intended for an audience new to the area from warmer climes. I’m going for useful and humorous and will include things like shopping for a winter coat, the art of layering, winter bicycling, myths, dos and don’ts, and advice on how to keep the laughter at your expense of winter hardy natives from becoming too excessive. Notice I don’t say keep people from laughing. That’s impossible. I have lived here for fifteen years and native Minnesotans still laugh at me.
On the reading front, I haven’t had much time these last few days to read except on public transit. My current book is Script and Scribble. My library finally bought and processed a copy. So far I am enjoying it very much.
Well, here’s hoping my life turns a little boring and remains so for a week or two or longer.
That’s terrible. I hope your husband feels better now. I know what you mean about longing for boredom sometimes. I like your idea for your website topic. I know I would certainly need such a site if I were to move to a cold climate. I hate winter in North Carolina for crying out loud.
Sorry to hear your Bookman has had to deal with bad health issues. I had a run in with a fast food taco place (definite food poisoning, too, and it was NOT pretty), so I can relate to that anyway. I hope he’s feeling better. Good luck with your studies–you’ve got to be nearing the end soon? I’d ne curious to learn CSS–that’s something that I could use in Typepad, but I’m too lazy to try (well, more like not enough time).
Oh, yes, a boring life sounds very good! I’m glad your Bookman is okay — that reaction sounds frightening, and I’m glad everything worked out. That on top of food poisoning! You both definitely deserve some boredom after all that.
Your poor Bookman! Why is it always the mexican food that does us wrong? I should know – I grew up eating mexican food and it seems like I had stomach aches more often than not! And then for him to have a major side effect to his med injection – it sounds like you both could use a day or two of relaxation. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on “Script And Scribble” as I have been eyeing it over at the bookstore. Unfortunately, nonfiction never fails to put me to sleep! Right now I’m in the middle of a biography about M.S. Hershey and no matter how fascinating it is, I will still find myself dozing off.
Ugh…sounds rough. Some of those MS medications have really nasty side effects. My father-in-law has chosen not to continue with several MS meds due to the side effects.
You’re right, CSS is really pretty straightforward. Most of the problems people encounter come from poor browser implementation (especially older browsers like IE6, IE7).
Here’s to lots of humdrum, routine days for you both.
I’m inspired by your web-designing, makes me think I might just about be able to do it one day if I try really hard : )
Sounds like you both had a very rough night. I am so very sorry. Hopefully, you can both get some well deserved rest. I like your website idea, too. But I truly miss the cold Chicago winters, snow and winter sports. Winters in Savannah are so puny. If an odd snow flake should fall from the sky, it shuts down the entire town. I guess there really is no place like home (click, click go the ruby slippers).
Boring is under-rated. Here’s wishing you more boring days ahead
Sorry to hear of your medical-related emergency of yesternight.
This may be a bit self-indulgent of a comment, a bit off-topic, but you have inspired me here to perhaps create my own website about Hamburger-Related Desserts.
Lisa, thanks he is feeling much better and even went to work today. I was sort of worried my website topic was dumb even though I would have loved such a resource when I moved here, so am glad to hear you think it is a good idea!
Danielle, thanks, he’s doing much better now and has become motivated to take his own lunch to work. I am right in the middle of the spring quarter and will be done with this web class about the second week of June.
Dorothy, thanks. I’ve never wished for boring more. But it seems things are looking up and I might get my wish.
Laura, it’s a mystery. And he’s been having bean burritos from this place for years without a problem, so I guess you just never know. Script and Scribble is enjoyable so far. Funny nonfiction makes you sleepy. Maybe you need to eat more chocolate while you read that bio!
Wil, they can be nasty. The medication he was taking before his current one made his liver go all wacky. I’m glad to have my css suspicions confirmed. I’ve gathered that browsers make life difficult for web designers. My text book has side notes that say things like “this does not work for older browsers”
Maggie, thanks! And I bet you could do web designing just fine. It really isn’t all that hard it just looks like it is.
Grad, thank you. Winter in Savannah sounds like what it’s like getting rain in souther California, everyone freaks out!
Dark Orpheus, I agree. Thanks!
Cip, thanks twice over, for your kind words and for making me laugh…hamburger-related desserts? I don’t even want to know!
Oh poor Bookman! This just hasn’t been his week. Here’s hoping you both have a nice boring weekend with a sufficient quota of vegan desserts.
I love your website idea! Can’t wait to see it.
My goodness me, you have ALL my sympathy. I am so sorry for poor bookman, who sounds like he had 48 hours from hell. And it’s no fun at all to have to be the healthy person dealing with the sick person, either. I must say I have become very fond indeed of dull, routine days – they have much to recommend them. Take care of yourselves and don’t attempt anything dangerous like leaving the house. Reading is good! Reading is safe!
Oh my goodness, that’s a terrible reaction! I hope he feels better now and that you guys are all recovered and having a nice boring weekend.
Glad to hear Bookman is feeling better. I know it’ s no fun having to play nurse, so I imagine you’re feeling better now too. Your web site sounds great. Can’t wait to read it.
Sylvia, the weekend has been both boring and filled with vegan yumminess! Thanks!
Litlove, thank you. Your comment made me smile, especially the last bit
It was not from from on either side of the equation, but all is well now knock on wood.
Daphne, he feels fine now. Thankfully the effects are not long lasting. And a “boring” weekend helped
Emily, you and I have the same approach to nursing so you can imagine that I was pretty miserable. But all is well now and we are both feeling better, thanks. Now I have to get to work on that website since so many people seem to think it is a great idea!
