I agree, I think Mr. Thwaites just knew he could bully her and did so. You know what I sort of liked about his character though? When he goes off into his "ghastly idiolect" (as the intro describes). It made me really visualize this character. Although, can you imagine having to listen to that! I think I would have thrown my soup at him :)

I'm not quite finished with the book, so I'm saving reading your post in full until the weekend! I did skim and agree it is a quiet sort of book and you really only get the slightest inkling that there is even a war on. Interesting how he manages that. It's a different sort of tension altogether! Can't say I care much for Mr Thwaites, Vicki or even Lt. Pike, but Miss Roach is growing on me!

You have expressed my thoughts exactly, and I could not improve one bit on what you've said. Once again, I've been happily introduced to a book I'd never have otherwise read except for book bloggers.

I'm really sorry not to have joined in with this one, but for some reason I simply couldn't muster any enthusiasm to read it. Still, it sounds like it was interesting and I'll be popping over to watch the discussion, even if I can't participate.
