Your Librarian, Your Freedom Fighter (via Library Stuff):
“Who is it for me to say what you should read or what anyone should read or view?” said Wolff, the library’s administrator. “It is not to say you should not read something because it might be controversial. It’s not the role of a library. I’m not a radical, but it’s my profession and it’s something I take seriously.”
Banned Books Week starts Saturday. Don’t forget how important libraries and librarians are in preserving our freedom to read. For the majority of librarians preserving the freedom to read is just part of what they do, no big deal. If, during Banned Books Week you told your favorite librarian thanks for being a freedom fighter, s/he may stammer and blush but inside, your gratitude will be appreciated and remembered should that librarian ever be confronted by someone who wants to ban a book.
*applause*!!!!
I have looked around and it seems that you are my favourite librarian.
Thank you for being a freedom fighter!
Hear, hear! Librarians are a force to be reckoned with.
Yay for banned books! I should find myself one of those to read.
We are celebrating the freedom to read with BBW in our library this week with a contest, a banned books brunch book talk and a banned books trivia night. It should be fun and spark some interesting discussions in the library!
Hurrah for Freedom to Read! I need to see if I can squeeze in a book that would be a good read for this week.
Daphne, thanks!
Litlove, golly *blush*
Emily, we do our best
Dorothy, the lists of banned and challenged books are sadly quite long so you have lots to choose from.
Lesley, sounds like you have some fun things planned. I hope you get large turn outs for your events!
Iliana, for some reason Banned Books Week always catches me by surprise and I scramble to find a short book to read.
