There is a marvelous campaign going on right now to help people understand the importance of libraries and library funding called Geek the Library. Their website talks about the myths and facts of library funding and why it is crucial for people who care about libraries to also care about how libraries are funded, or in this bad economy, how they are not funded and why so many have to close or cut back staff and hours. There’s news and information and a chance for you to tell the world wide web what you geek. Because whatever it is you geek, the public library supports you.
I geek learning, and reading, and gardening and Ralph Waldo Emerson, and, and, and…
What do you geek?
On a side note, I managed to pull off an A- on the paper I wrote for class while I was suffering from vertigo. I can live with that.

Wait, geek is a verb? I had no idea! It looks like a great campaign – such an important message.
Congrats on that good grade you earned while sick!
Fantastic job on your paper. I geek ghost stories, craft books, cookbooks, art…
I’m with Dorothy–geek as a verb? Ah, well, if it supports a good cause, I’m all for it. Let’s see…I “geek” books, magazines, travel shows, cooking and lolcats.
And kudos on your paper!
I volunteer in a neighboring library once a week. It’s in a quickly growing neighborhood and they DESPERATELY need more funding. The most recent referendum failed. It is so very sad. They can’t even have story time or book groups in the library it is so crowded.
I geek books and libraries and cooking!
Thank you for the link to the great website!
Good job on success in the face of adversity! I geek Sherlock Holmes, cookbooks, old Honeymooners and I Love Lucy tapes, and Ireland.
Congratulations on the paper and many thanks for the info about “Geek the Library.” I featured the campaign on M-mv with a HT to So Many Books.
It’s been ages since I last left you a comment, Stefanie, but I do appreciate your site.
Best regards,
Melissa
My city seriously needs this campaign…
Congrats on the grade–very impressive considering you were ill!
You are officially a genius!
Wow – good job on the paper! So glad that the vertigo didn’t take too much of a toll in this area at least. The thought of libraries being continually underfunded is really upsetting me of late. Why do people cut back on services that are extra necessary in times of recession? Oh it makes me sad. Very glad to know this campaign is out there and fingers crossed for its success.
Dorothy, I know, I was surprised that geek was a verb too. Maybe it is a newly minted verb. And thanks!
Daphne, thank you! Oh yes, craft books! I geek those too
Rosemary, my dictionary lists it as a noun and “geeky” as an adjective, so I suspect that it was turned into a verb for the campaign. And thanks!
Rebecca, how sad your library referendum failed. I think it is hard to make people see how a tax increase can be a good thing. They don’t miss the library until it isn’t there anymore and they need it. Good luck, I hope things turn around.
Molly, oh you are very welcome!
Grad, thanks! I Love Lucy and the Honeymooners, huh? That explains your great sense of humor
MFS, thank you much, the feeling is mutual!
Danielle, thank you. I think the campaign is national so hopefully someone in your city will pick up on it.
Jodie, well I don’t know about that, but thanks!
Litlove, thank you, it is a relief. Are UK libraries underfunded too? It is very sad. I think public libraries are one of the greatest public goods we have.
