We are dug out from the snow at my house except we still need to rake some of it off the roof so we don’t get ice dams when things melt and then refreeze. We ended up with about a foot of snow, not as much as originally predicted. That’s because on Christmas day instead of snowing it rained and then of course it all froze. I would have preferred the snow because now there is a thin glaze of ice on the streets and sidewalks making things dangerous for the unwary.
My Bookman and I holed up snug and warm during the storm. We read and watched movies and polished off the Solstice leftovers. I hope everyone who was celebrating these last few days had a wonderful time.
Both of the movies we watched were bookish. I know Lost in Austen has gotten a mix of reviews but we really enjoyed it. We also watched Hogfather, a movie made from Terry Pratchett’s book by the same name. I’ve not read the book but my Bookman has and he said they did a pretty good job. We both enjoyed it very much as well as the interview with Pratchett we found in the special features.
As for reading, I finished The Angel’s Game and will be writing about it nice and proper tomorrow. I’ve also been enjoying Proust and the Squid and began reading The Tyranny of E-Mail. It is a strange confluence that Angel’s Game and the two movies I watched are about faith and belief of various sorts and expectations not living up to reality. The other two books both manage to examine different aspects of how the written word has affected culture and the evolution of communication and information (and the human brain). I feel like I’m swimming in a pool of related ideas and various perspectives on them.
I will be starting in on Margaret Atwood’s The Year of the Flood later this evening and I am sure she will be adding to the pool. Now where did I put my flippers and snorkel?
Oh Stefanie, I cannot imagine having to deal with snow and ice. So, do you still ride your bike in that kind of weather? I remember you showed us one time how you prepare for winter weather on your bike but don’t know if you still ride if there’s snow on the road.
I really want to watch Lost in Austen. I think I’ll like it. Stay warm and enjoy the new Atwood!
I’m surprised it was warm enough to rain there. Isn’t it supposed to be -40 there or something?
I can’t imagine anyone not liking Lost in Austen. It’s just plain fun. Who knew about Miss Bi-ngley?
I didn’t know that there was a Hogfather movie. I’ll be looking for that one! I’m glad that you’ve had a cozy couple of days despite the onslaught of snow!
We’ve been getting bad combinations of rain/snow/freezing temperatures and it’s a real pain. This winter is going to be a long one, I’m afraid. I’m glad all your reading is connecting up — that’s fun!
Don’t you just hate ice? I can almost handle the snow, but ice is too treacherous to get about on. I have these things to put on the bottom of my shoes that help grip the ice and packed snow and I’ve already worn them several times this winter! Glad you’re all dug out now. I only wish someone would come and clean our street and we’d be doing well, too. I think Dorothy is right about it going to be a long winter!! And I thought Lost in Austen was great fun. It was just so quirky and funny it was hard to resist.
I am SO jealous of your being snowed in. I love being snowed in! It’s so cozy to be wrapped in a blanket, a cup of tea at hand, a good book on the go, and snow falling outside…Sigh. Seriously, that’s my idea of reading heaven.
There was a lot of reading heaven here last winter but this winter, there’s been literally less than 2 cm of snow and it’s all melted almost immediately.
But having the option to go outside is nice too.
I hope you’re able to get around okay in spite of the ice on the ground. And I’m looking forward to your review of The Angel’s Game; I have it here but have been somewhat afraid to pick it up for fear it’s not as good as The Shadow of the Wind…
Iliana, since I got the job at the library downtown I have not been doing much bike riding which makes me sad and will have to be remedied somehow. If I were still at my old job I would definitely be riding in the ice and snow though. I am certain you will like Lost in Austen!
Sylvia, the rain was weird, we were right at freezing so the rain fell with big fat snowflakes mixed in. We won’t get to -40 until the end of January
Ha! and yes, Miss Bingley cracked me up!
Kate, Oh yes, and there is a movie of The Color of Magic too but I haven’t seen that one, yet.
Dorothy, I was wondering what happened to the storm after it left here. It is great fun when reading connects up and there is the time and space to enjoy it. I could get used to being on vacation!
Danielle, ice is the worst. I’ve seen those things you have for your shoes. I hear they work pretty well. I don’t have far to walk to the bus stop so I’ve not invested in any. Lost in Austen was wonderfully quirky, wasn’t it? I think the quirky is what made it so hard to resist.
Colleen, being snowed in is marvelous, it’s just the afterwards that isn’t so fun when you have to shovel all that snow from the sidewalk and the roof. Hopefully you’ll get more snow, just enough for reading heaven
I totally remember that snow-layered-with-ice thing from Finland… and yes, riding my bike on it! Not fun at all! Very dangerous. I hope you guys are all dug out by now. Sounds very cozy, however. We are hoping for a few days of rain to finish out the year in a cozy fashion…
Ice is no fun at all so good decision to hole up and keep warm and free of broken bones. I want to see what you thought of Angel’s Game as it made its way into my house as a Christmas present for my mum (which means I can borrow it) but I see it getting unenthusiastic reactions now. Hope you had a lovely time over your break.
Ugh – we had something similar. A fair amount of snow and then several freezing nights. The pavements outside were like the Cresta Run. Being holed up with books and movies and one’s loved ones sounds pretty fab, though. Looking forward to hearing all about your recent reading!
Daphne, we are all dug out and doing well. We’ve figured out where all the icy patches on the sidewalk are. I hope you get rain, though that means it will probably blow my way and turn into more snow!
Jodie, any excuse to hole up
Angel’s Game post is up. It was good but not great.
Litlove, sometimes I wish I had boots where I could push one button and they turned into skates, press another and they are snowshoes. Given that I am not a very practiced skater though, the skate button might not be a good idea.
