This is a superb edition of Shakespeare’s “The Winter’s Tale”. The comprehensive introduction gives a good overview of the history of the play, and critical approaches to it. The notes – set out on the same page as the text – elucidate difficult passages, give glosses on words no longer current in the English language, and list possible variant readings. The appendices include the full text of Shakespeare’s main source.

Glad you got the BBC in your Netflix queue. Now that you are finished, I can tell you about a production I saw in Boston where the Bear who chased them off stage at the end of one scene, morphed (via costume) into the lambs of the next scene. One of my favorite stage designs ever.

Dorothy, I suspect after getting a chance to watch the film I will end up liking the play better. Watching a performance helps with some of the details and the humor.
