Ugh, we got up to 95F today. It broke a 100+ year-old record of 88F for this day. The average temperature is 74. I would really like to be average. Since it is Monday and too hot to think on top of it, I thought I’d share a funny video that has been making the rounds of the library newsletters.
The New York Public Library is facing the biggest budget cuts in its long and illustrious history. To help call attention to the library they invited an improv group to invade its hallowed halls. No one knew what they were going to do or when. This is what happened:
I think more than anything it is the reactions of the people at the library that are so priceless.
Be sure to visit Improv Everywhere’s website for behind the scenes commentary and stills. You will also find out what the security guard (who had no idea what was going on) said to the first ghost as he entered the library.
95! Perfection.
Heh. I love that young people know Ghostbusters (or so it seems). And that everyone is carrying cameras. This is the age of show and tell!
What a hoot – thanks for sharing. Oh, and give me your 95 any time (as long as it’s not humid).
The guy who starts texting as soon as a dude in a sheet sits next to him… is really priceless. When a ghost shows up, who you gonna call? Tweeter!
Oh that was GREAT! Thanks so much for sharing!
Richard, you should go see someone for treatment of your obvious insanity
Sylvia, I know, I guess Ghostbusters has infiltrated the culture. And everyone taking pictures was hilarious!
whisperinggums, in the midwest of the US when there is heat there is also humidity. But even without humidity 95 would still be too hot. Like Richard, you should go see someone to treat your insanity
Charlotte, aren’t the various reactions hilarious? I love the little girl who is obviously very excited by what is going on and is jumping and pointing.
Molly, glad you enjoyed it!
LOL Stefanie. But, humidity and I’m outta there. I’ll never forget travelling through Texas in June one year – I particularly remember being in San Antonio and visiting a large old mission in a sweltering climate, and walking in Big Bend Park. Oh dear. The year before we’d walked at a similar time in Arches in Utah. Similar temps but way less humidity. So much more bearable. 95
Today’s max here is 57°F. Yuk – and we are on the way down. Darwin, where I’ll be in two weeks is, today, 91°F. Now, THAT’s more like it!
Summer in the southern US can be horrible. I visited an aunt and uncle in Oklahoma once during the summer and it was over 100 everyday and humid. We’d have to get up with the sun to be able to do anything outdoors and by 8 we were turning on the a/c. Dry heat is much easier to take. It’s more like you are in an oven but at least you can breathe! I’ll take 57
I think it was very cute, although I’m not too sure a library is the place to disrupt things – even for the sake of levity. What I am most surprised about are the reactions. Didn’t anyone fear that this might be something ominous rather than a joke? Especially in New York? Maybe that’s a good sign?
Too funny (even without any sound on my end…)! And it’s too hot, too soon, here as well. I fear it is going to be a loooooonnnnngg summer.
I absolutely adore IE (and participated with their Boston counter-part: Banditos Misteriosos), so I think this was an incredible way to jolt people into awareness about their local library. I love the people who kind of try to ignore it. How do you NOT react to a 6-foot-tall white sheet with eye holes sitting next to you?!
Hilarious! But I feel for you – we had cracking hot weather all weekend and Monday, too. But things are distinctly cooler now – it’s much nicer!
Grad, no one seemed to be upset by the interruption and the whole thing lasted for less than 5 minutes. The improv group was very aware of and careful to keep the disruption short. They were invited by the library. And I am sure they have seen a lot stranger things there than someone with a sheet over his head
Danielle, you didn’t miss much without the sound expect the ghosts going “ooooo” while they were being chased. Our heat broke last night. Hope yours did too. Hopefully this will just be a blip on what will be a gorgeous summer.
Rebecca, how cool that you participated in a similar improv group. That must be so much fun! And yeah, I love the people who are trying to ignore what’s going on!
Litlove, glad you enjoyed it. I don’t like summer much especially when it comes so early. I might have to move further north if it continues to get hot so early here. Our heat broke last night and we will have a few lovely days before it gets humid again. I hope you have a string of nice days on your side of the pond!
Now you really are teasing me – go further north indeed. I never heard such a thing!
Well with global warming and all I think I’m going to have to migrate north eventually. Anything over 85 is too hot and over the last several years there seem to be more and more days that are above 90 in the summer. Pretty soon I’ll be living with Santa Claus on what’s left of the north pole
Oh, that is so great. I have always wanted to check out this library (get it? “check out” ?? Library humor…)
95 is too hot. We are still having 55-degree days with rain, rain, rain. I kind of love it, but everyone else is like, Hello? We’re in California?
I’d have been saying that too when I lived in California – then again, I do like a bit of autumn weather. I just don’t much like winter weather. It’s raining here today and we are pleased as we are desperate for some rain for our dams.
That is so funny! I too loved the reactions….
Daphne, LOL, I’m always ready for library humor
55 is a little cool, 65 would be fantastic. It is odd though for you to be getting rain this time of year. Enjoy it while it lasts!
Rebecca, glad you enjoyed it!
