It has been a weekend full of learning!
- While working on my thesaurus for my school project (topic: vegan nutrition and health) I learned that the vitamin B12, the only nutrient vegans can’t get in their diet is actually a bacteria in dirt. The reason vegans need to buy foods fortified with B12 is because we wash our veggies and what little bit of dirt might be left in the crannies of a carrot or a potato is not enough. The vitamin is stored in the body so those who eat meat are getting the nutrient because the cow or the pig or the chicken doesn’t generally wash its food before eating it.
- After catching and releasing two bees at two different times in the house I figured out that I should start shaking out the sheets and towels when I take them off the clothesline in the yard.
- After my ballroom dance lesson Friday night in which Bookman and I worked really hard on our waltz frame I learned that keeping the proper posture and stretch for nearly an hour really works all the kinks out of your back muscles as well as finds muscles you didn’t know you had.
- I learned – came to realize – that reading in bed for an hour and a half (8 – 9:30) can be / is just as satisfying as staying up really late and reading which means I am also learning to accept the limitations of getting older and having a work and school schedule that makes me tired (though I am sure it is more the work and school schedule than it is getting older that keeps me from late night reading in bed and I’m going to stick with that until I am done with school and it gets proved otherwise).
- I have to sign up for the fall quarter at school already on Tuesday. Having an elective and not knowing what to take, I emailed one of the faculty advisors who is a digital resources librarian and asked for a recommendation. I will be signing up for his class on digital preservation which I expect will be interesting. He also added me to his email distribution list that he uses to send out job announcements to students. At first I was annoyed but then decided it is a good thing because you never know what might pop up and it is an easy and convenient way to keep track of what is happening in the job field that I am interested in and I can use the required qualifications on the job descriptions as a guideline for things I still need to learn. Why didn’t I email this guy sooner?
Whew! I feel so much smarter now!
That’s a lot of learning! I’ve learned this weekend that I really hate big cities in summer, and that small towns rock. Sigh.
Those are some very interesting things you learned this weekend. I shake all the towels etc. before bringing them back inside for fear of spiders…
Your new class sounds intriguing, and you are very smart to sign up for a job distribution list already… never soon enough to get an idea of what’s out there and what requirements are appearing frequently.
It sounds like a very fruitful weekend indeed! How bizarre about vitamin B-12. I never thought about eating animal who don’t wash their food. Have to say that that’s pretty gross if you let yourself think about it for too long. And I can totally relate to knowing about sleeping limitations–I can’t stay up late either. Most of the time I fall asleep during the news. Sad but true.
That’s very interesting about vitamin B12. I guess it’s true that you gotta eat a peck o’ dirt before you die!
I hate to say this but it might be getting older. My absolutely best reading time these days is exactly that – 8-9.30am on weekend mornings when Mr Gums brings me breakfast in bed. I’m alert then. At night my concentration – when I do manage to stay awake – is nowhere near as good.
Love your other lessons too…and good luck with the Digital Preservation. Again, I’ll be interested in what you cover. It’s a pretty big field. Is it about Preserving digital stuff, or digitising for preservation, or both?
Oh and I forgot. You are so right about the dancing…great exercise and great fun as well. It’s win win I reckon.
How much you learned! That’s very interesting about B12, although I’m with Danielle in finding it a tad disturbing. And I like your accepting attitude towards your reading schedule. I think life would be much easier if I learned to accept things more readily!
Colleen, big cities in summer are hot and induce grumpiness, don’t they? It is nice to have a pleasant escape. Thankfully Minneapolis feels like a smaller city than it is.
Melwyk, no problems with spiders on the clothesline, I like spiders so they don’t creep me out too much. I am still in the middle of my summer class but the fall class should be interesting I hope!
Danielle, a very fruitful weekend. Isn’t that fascinating and gross about the B12? I always thought it was something animals produced themselves so I was surprised to find out it came from dirt. If I had a TV and watched the news before bed I’m sure I’d be falling asleep during it too!
Sylvia, my mom always used to say “a little dirt won’t hurt you” and apparently she was right though I don’t think she ever imagined it could be good for you.
Whisperinggums, don’t burst my bubble!
Though if it means getting my Bookman to bring me breakfast in bed on the weekends I might have to reconsider. And thanks, digital preservation won’t start until September but I am hoping it will be good. The class covers according to the catalog: Traditional vs Digital Preservation. The OAIS model; Acquisition, Selection, and Provenance; History and Cultural Archives; Technologies: Digitization and Beyond; Government, Legal, and Policy Issues; Preservation Metadata and Archival Description; Multimedia Preservation and Personal Information Preservation; Electronic Records and eScience; Trusted Repositories and Archival Management; Access. More than you probably wanted to know
Litlove, I didn’t expect to learn so much this weekend but when it comes in such various forms it is surprising just how much you can come to understand. And if you become disturbed enough about the B12 I’d be happy to help you with your transition to vegan
After so many attempts over the last year or so to stay up late reading in bed and failing every time, that acceptance came slowly!
Look at you all smart now
I hate to admit that I can’t stay up reading books as late as I used to but I’m also trying to read a bit earlier in the evening.
I love to learn. Am learning about blogging right now, in fact!
I just started a book review log. I would like to ask you to stop by and give it a look. I am looking for advice for those who have “gone before”. Please let me know if you have any advice for me…
Many thanks,
Angie

I had no idea about the vitamin B12. That’s so interesting, but also, as many have already pointed out, a tad unsettling. O well. I always heard a bit of germ exposure was good for you, but eating dirt!
Today was the first day I dried my laundry in the sun on the clothesline and it all smelled so nice! I didn’t accidentally wrap any bees in the clothes, but one on the lawn got stuck up my pants leg. I nearly freaked out but then just opened the waistband a bit and he flew out. I’m soooo glad I didn’t get stung!
Oh no, that wasn’t more than I wanted to know at all. Sounds like an excellent and comprehensive course.
You are living an incredibly interesting life.
And I have learned here — no WONDER I am not getting my proper daily dose of Vitamin B12….. I am washing ALL of the dirt off my hamburgers!
Iliana, I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’m smarter
Angie, thanks for stopping by, and good luck!
Jeane, it is amazing how we have evolved to need a vitamin that must come from bacteria in dirt, isn’t it? It’s weird but cool, like getting vitamin D from the sun. I would have freaked out if a bee went up my pants leg too! So glad you didn’t get stung!
whisperinggums, I hope the class turns out to be good. I’ll find out in September!
Cipriano, heh, you are being much too fastidious. Roll that burger around in the dirt and enjoy with a cold beer to wash down the grit
What a great list! You are cracking me up. I have to sign up for a class this fall too, although I’m really feeling torn about whether or not to do it since we might be moving, but we might not… ack! Oh well. And yes, shaking sheets before bringing them in: good.
Sounds like a great weekend to me!
I can’t stay up reading books as late as I used because my wife gets on at me these days but I am trying to read more when she is at work.
