Happy Friday everyone!
Not much today, just a few links. Friday seems to be a good day for those. Who wants to think on Friday?
Christa Wolf won the Thomas Mann Prize. I read her book Medea quite a number of years ago and really liked it. I love the Medea story and Wolf’s take on it is quite good. I’ve always meant to read other books she wrote but I get distracted. Sigh.
AbeBooks is featuring old-fahsioned horror books. All of them were written before 1060. Just looking at the covers is fun. And I bet none of them would give me nightmares. Haunting of Hill House is on the list and while it didn’t give me bad dreams it certainly has stayed with me. So maybe I shouldn’t be so quick to judge the other books. Has anyone read any of them and if so, what did you think?
I thought I had more links but that appears to be it. Go enjoy some good books and have a happy and safe Halloween!
Some very cool cover art on those old horror books! Although, they’re not QUITE as old as you imply with your funny typo – I was like, “written before 1060??? I guess one could call Beowulf a horror story…”
Ha! That typo made me laugh too. WAY old-fashioned!
I wanted to check out the last millenium horror books myself! And I am not for reading scary books. Even Anne Rice freaks me out.
Oh Lord – I love the Medea story. One of my favorite moments at the theater was watching The Kabuki Medea and when she came out with her flaming clock it was mind boggling. Alas EWU only has articles by this author and some of her other books – I will have to go searching.
I have a book of essays by Christa Wolf to read, but it is on the chunky side, so I’ve not attempted it yet. I love those AbeBook lists–too fun–especially some of those cheesy covers. Have a great weekend, too!
I’ve only read The Haunting of Hill House but those book covers are definitely a blast from the past. I bet some of them are good!
Fantastic covers! And I haven’t read any if these except the Jackson (one of my all-time favs). Looks like I’m about to add a new chapter to the TBR tome.
ds from Third-Storey Window urged me to read Medea over a year ago, but I had completely forgotten about it – the reminder is very much appreciated!
I have Cassandra by Christa Wolf on my shelves but haven’t got a chance to read it yet
Ooh Christa Wolf! Yay! Very glad to see her get some recognition. Maybe this will mean her books will come back in print. I do hope so.
Emily, ha! I was just checking to see who was paying attention
Daphne, they are the stories that have been scaring people since they were sitting around the campfire picking mammoth out of their teeth
Carrie, LOL, just going back to the roots of horror and the stories that began it all!
Patty, Kabuki Medea? Cool! Hope you can find the book. Don’t forget about interlibrary loan!
Danielle, I’ve not read any of Wolf’s essays. I bet they are good and brainy. And aren’t the old covers great? They don’t do cover art like they used to.
Kathleen, I bet some of them are good too. It looks like one of them might be where the movie Invasion of the Bodu Snatchers came from. I bet that’d be good, cheesy fun!
pvreader, those books seem right up your alley!
Nymeth, glad to provide the reminder! I think you would like Wolf’s Medea very much.
Em, Wolf did a book abou Cassandra? I’ve got to find a copy of that!
Litlove, why am I not surprised that you like Christa Wolf? Her work is hard to come by. I assumed it was because it hasn’t all been translated but I suppose it has been and many of them are just out of print as you say. Very sad!
Wow, I too was wondering which books were written before 1060 lol. I am not a fan of horror books, though, so those are some I won’t be reading.
Rebecca, Heh. I thought about fixing the typo but since it has been so amusing I decided to just leave it. I’m sure there must be some horror books written before 1060. I’ll have to do some investigating one of these days
