About mid-February I was a little worried because I hadn’t felt like book shopping for quite awhile. I can happily say that I don’t have to worry any longer. What a relief!
Bookman and I ventured out in the rain, yes, rain not snow, to Half Price Books for a little look around. We didn’t find much but enjoyed browsing. Bookman brought home a Mary Oliver book he didn’t have and I found a book by Stanley Cavell called The Claim of Reason. I’ve seen Cavell’s name popping up lately and he’s got a couple books about Emerson I am interested in, but this is the only one of his books that was on the shelf. Nonetheless, it looks like it might be interesting reading. He uses literature to illustrate his philosophical discussion.
After HPB we went across the street to Barnes and Noble and used a 15% of one item coupon to get One of Our Thursdays is Missing and because we didn’t have it yet, we got Shades of Grey as well, recently out in paperback.
Hooray for new books!
And, why, you may ask, is there a Kindle in the photo too? Well, it is an early birthday present from Bookman. My birthday isn’t for another two weeks but he didn’t see why I should have to wait. So there is it. Now Bookman and I don’t have to share anymore. Not that sharing was a problem, but it was kind of like joint custody. He got it during the day and I got it on nights and weekends. It will be nice to not have to worry about interrupting each other’s book.
It has been a pleasant no school weekend. Of course I haven’t read as much as I had planned. I had a sort of tidy-up fit and then I got caught up on email and then, oh look, where did the time go? But there is still a little weekend left so I should go take advantage of that while I can. Just have to figure out what I want to read. Hmmm…
Happy early birthday! What a wonderful present from Bookman. I just picked up “One of our Thursdays is Missing” at the library yesterday. Haven’t read any of these, but I’m looking forward to it.
What a lovely present…happy early birthday!
I’d like to get to One of our Thursdays is missing eventually!
I just saw that One of Our Thursdays is Missing was out! I really enjoy this series. I haven’t read Shades of Grey yet either.
I haven’t felt like shopping recently either, mostly because I did buy a lot of books in February and then we got both our cats fixed at the same time. I’ve been trying to use our library more, as well as read what I have been buying. There are so many books to read, and I do love going in to bookstores. I enjoyed reading about yours and Bookman’s adventures in this post….and the sharing of the e-book that is no longer required! I’ve begun to look at them too, as they are lighter to carry around, and I could read new books when they were published and not worry about the weight of the hardcover.
I’ll be interested in what you make of ‘Shades of Grey’, which is rather different from his other books. It split our library group (Thursday Next fans all) right down the middle. I won’t say what I thought, other than that I did find the subtle shift interesting and wonder where it might take him eventually.
Oddly enough I haven’t felt like book shopping either – there must be something wrong with me! But it’s lovely to go out and find some new books in a very discerning sort of way. Happy early birthday, too!
Tina, thank you! If you’ve not read any thursday books yet, I hope this one starts you on to a lovely obsession.
Softdrink, thanks!
Mystica, I am looking forward to getting to Thursday. It seems it has been such a long time since the last one.
Susan, I love the Thursday books, they are such fun. One of my cats spent the weekend at the hospital at the end of January which put a crimp in the book fund so I know how that goes. I take public transit to work so the Kindle is really convenient for that.
Annie, oh you’ve got me really curious about Shades of Grey now!
Litlove, thanks! I’m sure there is nothing wrong with you. It is good to take little book buying breaks now and then in spite of the nervousness it invokes.
That IS a relief, haha. Happy early birthday. I think Fforde is a great way to break a book-buying funk.
The Claim of Reason sounds like it could be very interesting! Looking forward to hearing what you think of it.
Congratulations on the Kindle and Happy Birthday a bit early!
Hooray for new books – and that’s a snazzy Kindle on that book pile. Enjoy!
Emily, I know, I was starting to worry just a little. Now I just have to clear the reading schedule so I can read Fforde!
Nymeth, My fingers are crossed that Claim of Reason is a good one. Hopefully I’ll be able to get to it sooner rather than later.
Kathleen, thanks!
Michelle, new books even if only a few in number are always a happy occasion and you can’t see that there are about 50 classics already loaded onto the Kindle.
People keep asking me if I want a Kindle, and so far, I don’t — but I can see that I might at some point… sounds like you did some good catching-up on your book-acquisitions!
That’s what I hate about vacations. I think I am going to spend lots of time reading, and then I end up doing something silly like cleaning out my closets or shampooing the carpets. You have at least redeemed yourself by buying some new books! Can you guys lend each other ebooks and move them from one Kindle to the other? Sharings nice, but having your own is pretty good, too! Enjoy the rest of your break.
Enjoy your Kindle, and your birthday, and your new books! I feel myself edging ever closer to a real ereader–my iphone doesn’t really count.
Daphne, I tried, that’s for sure. An ereader might be nice for your trips to OR but if you don’t mind taking books along there is no reason to just have a gadget for the sake of having a gadget.
Danielle, I know, there’s something wrong about that, isn’t there? Yes, we can share ebooks and move books between Kindles which is pretty nice.
Jane, thanks! I see people on the train reading on those tiny phone screens and I just don’t know how they do it. maybe I’m getting old? Nah!
I’m glad you had fun browsing. I think browsing itself is tons of fun, and I feel that way even when I’m not in the mood to buy anything. I’m getting ideas for the next time I’m in the mood to buy books! The Cavell book sounds interesting, and yay for another Kindle!
Dorothy, you are right, browsing itself is a pleasure. I am hoping the Cavell book is good and not jargon-y to the point of making me say, huh? And having my own Kindle is nice. I’ve been sending public domain books to it with abandon.
