into the librarian club. I have such great coworkers. They had a party for me today and I was awarded a bun and glasses with a gold cord. I have been practicing my shushing and I already have plenty of cardigans because the library is always so darn cold. Here I am decked out in my new librarian regalia:
I’m feeling a bit distracted this evening so here are a few links for your amusement:
Coworker Rachel sent me a link to some really awesome book paintings. I would totally love one of these.
And London Metropolitan University recently added The Women’s Library Suffrage Collection, a digital collection of materials documenting British women’s struggle for the vote. It is a fascinating collection so be sure to give it a browse!
And if you are feeling crafty and bookish, make your own unique bookmarks

Nice bun!
Love this! What a great photo. You need some really frumpy comfy shoes too. Congratulations!
Softdrink, why thank you very much
Sylvia, not a dumb question. The gold cord is on the arms of the glasses so I can wear them around my neck when not in use. Someday when I am head librarian I will have to upgrade to a beaded cord
LOL! I have a wooden beaded cord for my sunglasses, so I’d fit right in with you cool librarians!
Love it, Stefanie. My librarian friend and I – with whom I am currently working on a project in outback Australia – send out congratulations and want to say that we are wearing cardigans at present too because it is so darned cold here. Newman is in the desert so even though it is winter the days are reasonably warm, but we are working in a special airconditioned room designed to keep their small collection at even temperature.
Anyhow, how nice of your co-workers. I hope you get a job in the professional area you want soon.
What great swag you librarians have! I clicked on that bookmark link — they’re so cute! Even I, craft-challenged woman that I am, could probably make one of these.
Oh how wonderfully Nancy Pearl you look! She would be proud of that shushing finger.
I don’t recall which class you went to to learn how to do that?
Whisperinggums, thank you and your friend for the good wishes! Cardigans do come in handy don’t they? It’s summer here and was quite warm yesterday but the library was still cold and we don’t even have any special collections!
bloglily, we do get pretty awesome swag
Those bookmarks do look oretty easy don’t they? I love the monster one.
Litlove, why thank you
I learned the shushing technique in my very first class which was a sort of professional overview class that included copyright, intellectual freedom and shushing. I’ve been practicing regularly ever since.
As a retired “shusher” who graduated in 1960 way before you were born, I feel compelled to help with your new “liberian” trappings. You must have a nice pair of library scissors which you absolutely must not let anyone borrow! Congratulations…to quote one of my favorite authors, “Oh the places you go….”
Congratulations! Who needs a graduation ceremony when you get all this?
Don’t you feel like you have now truly arrived? I love that bookmark link, too. I might even need to try it out!
Ha, your coworkers are hilarious! And in light of these librarian stylings, I’m not sure what it says about me that I happen to be wearing a cardigan right now, and just this morning was happy to discover that my hair is long enough to put up into a bun…
Congrats! you look like you’ll fit right in
I am sadly, a glasses-wearing, cardigan carrying stereotype. Cardigans are necessary in the uncertain temperatures of the library! I laughed at Msdonjuan’s comment….because I do have that pair of scissors LOL
Congratulations! If I saw you shushing me like that, I’d be quiet
Msdonjuan, thank you! And thank you for letting me know about the scissors. I didn’t know about those!
Danielle, I know, a bun and glasses is much better than a cap and gown! I’m thinking I need to try making those bookmarks too. They have Christmas gifts written all over them.
Emily, I love my coworkers. You sound like a closet librarian
Melwyck, thanks! I do wear glasses for reading so it is only a matter of time I am sure before they become more permanent. I always wondered about the cardigans until I started working in a library and then it all made sense.
Dorothy, thanks! I am sure I would never shush you
Congratulations!
