…that kids are going swimming in the lakes to dry off.
Bada-dum! (that’s a drum cuz it’s a joke and yes I know it’s a bad joke)
It really is that humid though. The heat index, only in Minnesota do we have wind chill in the winter and a heat index in the summer, also known as the “feels like” temperature, is currently at 113F (45C it doesn’t sound so bad in celsius!), which is down a couple degrees from a few hours ago. The dew point made it up to 83F (28C) which is great if you are in a tropical forest, but not so great otherwise. The last time it was that humid in Minnesota it was the Pleistocene era. Okay, maybe not that long ago. I think we may have been glaciered over at that point. I could sure use a glacier about now.
The metro train broke down on my way home from work. I stood sweating for over 20 minutes while waiting to get on a hot and crowded bus that took another 30 minutes to get me home.
I am good for nothing this evening but this little rant and collapsing on my reading chaise with a glass of ice water and a book. Game of Thrones, here I come!
You all have a duty when winter comes, should I dare to complain when it gets to -20F (-29C), to remind me how miserable I was on this summer’s day. At least when it is cold I can wrap myself in a quilt. When it’s hot, well can’t go further than naked. Not that I am naked. Because I’m not. I have air conditioning. And what a bill I will get for it next month. I guess I won’t be buying any new books for awhile.
Update: Somehow in my heat-induced brain fog I disabled the comments for this post. All fixed now so we can commiserate about the weather
Oh ugh, yuk, awful humidity! It makes a person feel like a limp dishrag. You have all my sympathy, and I hope that the air conditioning and the Game of Thrones (which everyone, but everyone is reading) will restore you! And think what opportunities an economy drive will give you to source new free books on your kindle! (I never say die when it comes to book acquisition
).
As I was waking up this morning, I heard the local weather report that it was already 83 and felt like 95 — and the sun wasn’t even up yet. It was not a very motivating reason to get out of bed. Indiana rarely gets as cold as Minnesota — and then only for a day or so every few years — but we could probably have a contest on humidity and cooling bills. The air is so humid today that one wonders if it would be easier to breath if one had gills.
Oh well, if it can be of any consolation: 45C actually sounds like h… for one being used to measure temperature in C.
Well, Omaha is in the same sunny patch as Minneapolis, so I can truly understand and appreciate your need to tell bad jokes!
I’ve had to sleep on my sofa the last two days as it is too (waaaaaaaaaaaay too) warm in my upstairs. It’s like having a stack of warm fuzzy blankets on top of you and then a stack of warm fuzzy cats on top of the blankets. Old houses. You have to love ‘em. Okay, not in summer. If only they would say a cold front was coming there would be something to look forward to–a nice 80F day. Is that too much to ask? I’m now thinking longingly of those chilly days.
But I’d settle for fluffy white clouds and 70F.
looking forward to hearing your review on Game of Thrones!
Oh, ugh. That’s what I hate about summer – it’s hard to get cooler. We used to get up to 113 degrees but it was a dry heat! I sympathize with you utterly in your current sweltering conditions. TAKE WATER WITH YOU EVERYWHERE.
I’m looking forward to your Game of Thrones review as well!
It’s humid here as well, but not hot and humid, rainy-humid instead.
We got two marvellous days after you blew the hot weather in my direction (I’m not joking, the weather was wonderful when I was reading your reply). Have you run out of beath?
Thank God for air conditioning! I’ve just been praising the previous owners of my house to the skies for paying the money to install it. We’ve had to pay for repairs, but it’s so worth it. Your heat is heading our way now, and our electricity bill is going way up. Oh, well.
I’ve always wondered why folks live where it gets hot and humid, and then gets cold. Like my sister in Idaho. I guess it’s because that’s where folks were born and grew up, or found a job, and also because if everyone moved to the places of ideal climate, they wouldn’t all fit?
45 C sounds absolutely awful…and with humidity! Poor you, poor cats. I’m so bad at heat that I’m actually enjoying the unusually cool and rainy summer we’re having in London right now!
Still hanging out for the Game of Thrones review…
Litlove, LOL, I must say your comment about free books for my Kindle gave me the urge go search for some! You are wicked
The air conditioning and the book were just what I needed!
AnneCamille, oh yes, I have been wishing for gills too! We always have humid days now and then in the summer but not as humid as this! And our average number of days over 90 is around 8 or 9 days for the entire summer and we have already far exceeded it this year. It was even hot in Duluth and it never gets hot there! Hope we both cool off soon!
Sigrun, LOL, I was somehow hoping that 45C wasn’t as bad as 113F
Danielle, we’ve got some cool air from Canada today and along with the temperature the humidity has dropped. It isn’t going to last, apparently, but I hope you get to have some relief there too. Now, remember, we will not complain about being cold this winter!
Helen, it will be a little while, I’m not even halfway yet. But so far I am liking it a lot.
Carrie, I grew up in a suburb near San Diego where summer temps regularly got up to 100+ and we had no air conditioning. But it was not humid which, I think, what made it bearable. Gam of Thrones is really good so far. It’s a fat book though so it may be a week or so before I finish it.
Em, LOL, it’s hard to blow warm weather your way because of all the humdity! I think it might be on it’s way to you now, if it hasn’t already reached you. I think I sent the humidity along with it though and for that I am sorry
Dorothy, oh yes, I love central air conditiong! If it weren’t for that I’d be packing up for a vacation at the North Pole right now or sleeping in a local hotel. I hope the heat and humidity don’t hover over you for long!
Joe, I didn’t grow up here, I moved here and lived here voluntarily
This is a rare and record-breaking summer for us. On average we have only 8-9 days over 90 degrees and rarely do we go over 100. I really don’t mind the cold in the winter, I actually kind of like it. It’s the monotony that gets to me. We can’t all live in Hawaii or San Francisco
Maggie, I think I might have to hop on a plane and come for a visit!
The weather has improved today and should be decent until, of course, the weekend, when it is scheduled to turn bad again. The cats know where all the cool air conditioning vents are and spend their day sleeping in front of them!
It’s supposed to be nice and hot at home in Livermore today, like probably 97… but we don’t have that killer humidity, thank goodness! I’m reading Game of Thrones too! I love it. Parts are a little silly but I still kind of love it a lot.
Humidity, blech. It’s currently pretty gross in NYC, though not quite as hot as where you are – at the moment here it’s 92F with a heat index of 101F, though tomorrow’s going to be 99F with a heat index of 110F. Ew. I hope that it cools off for you soon – and that the cool air also manages to make its way eastward to New York!
Daphne, the heat is bad but the humidity is worse. There is a reason for the cliche, it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity!
Heather, ah yes, our heat and humidity has moved east and now you get to enjoy it too. We like to share, it’s the whole Minnesota Nice thing
I hope it doesn’t last long and that you have someplace cool to hang out!
Ooo, we are living parallel lives: A Game of Thrones and a horrible heat wave at the same time.
