Let the reading begin!
Well, actually it has already begun. Start time for me was 7 a.m.. I did not set the alarm but was up by 6:40. But one can’t start a 24-hour read-a-thon on an empty stomach! Bookman made toast and coffee and we had Kashi Autumn Wheat Cereal. While the toast and coffee were cooking, I read my first book, a book about big cats born in zoos. Admittedly it was mostly cute pictures but there was some text and I hadn’t had my coffee yet so it was perfect. After breakfast I had to shower to wash off the last vestiges of sleepiness. Now I am raring to go.
The last time I participated in the read-a-thon was the first time, in October 2007. I had just begun library school and had to read a banned book for my intro to library issues class. The read-a-thon came around at a perfect time and I read Lord of the Flies. This time there is no school and I have nothing to worry about except reading and keeping my eyes open for as long as possible.
I’ve noticed that a number of participants have been stocking up on snacks and have a pile of books they plan to read. I haven’t really planned anything and I hope I won’t find that I’m trying to run a marathon after having only ever run a 5K. This is not to say that I am completely unprepared. I have a pile of books to choose from and a cozy reading nest all set up.Bookman also baked brownies earlier in the week and he has been kind enough not to eat them all so I can have one later today. I am a coffee drinker so there will be plenty of that on hand, though not too much as it wouldn’t be good to overdo. Sitting is also hard work and I plan on break later in the day for some exercise for which I have an audiobook to “read.” So I am not completely unprepared. Will I make it for the long haul? Since I haven’t stayed up for 24-hours since college and those days are long gone, I am not anticipating being up the whole time. I will, however, endeavor to go as long as I possibly can, which means, I hope, to at least 10 or 11 tonight and who knows, maybe my endurance will ultimately surprise me.
Bookman was going to participate along with me, I was going to make him Tweet, but alas, he has to work today. He will get dragged into it when he gets home though. It will be nice to have company at that point.
I won’t be posting updates every hour, I think every two hours give-or-take should suffice. So let’s get this party started.
Happy reading everyone!

Glad Bookman saved you a brownie..you’ll need that sugar boost mid-way! Have fun!

Good luck with staying up
mmmmmm brownies…deliciously chocolatey loveliness
Happy read-a-thon! I hope you’re having fun.
I was surprised to find your posts – didn’t realise it was read-a-thon, duh! You look very prepared to me – nice reading nest!
I love that you call it a reading nest!
Love your nest. Did you make the quilt? Did you manage to read? A nest like that would make me sleep I think!
Thank you cheerleaders!
Litlove, glad you like my reading nest. It is quite cozy.
Meghan, heh, it’s a nice, comfy snug spot
whisperinggums, thanks! The quilt is handmade but not by me. It was made by my godmother when I was about 10. It has held up remarkably well over the years.
A well-made nicely cared for quilt should last well. My trouble is that in such a nest I’d probably go to sleep!
Indeed, I have a patchwork quilt my great-grandma made me when I was about 7 or 8. It is so thick and heavy though that it rarely comes out even in a MN winter. As for falling asleep in the nest, that’s what coffee is for, to keep me awake!
“But one can’t start a 24-hour read-a-thon on an empty stomach!”
I’m afraid this might be my downfall. I would surely spend more time fixing something to eat – in order to be ‘thon’ ready, of course.
Wow, re great-grandma’s quilt and MN, and LOL re coffee in the nest.
