I had a great time during the read-a-thon yesterday. I am impressed with how many books and pages people read during their 24 hours. I only read one book start to finish, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, a choreopoem/play. Still, I wasn’t planning on reading any books start to finish, I just planned on spending the day reading and that I did so I count it a huge success. I generally don’t have trouble finding time to read but devoting a whole day to it and nothing else was really luxurious.
I was awake at 6 a.m. this morning, which meant I could have squeezed in one more hour, but decided not to. I sort of felt like it would be cheating.
There were a number of people who read that made donations to charity. I think that is an awesome idea and next time I plan to jump on that bandwagon.
And now it’s back to regular life. There are chores to do and errands to run. There are also still plenty of books to read.
Thanks to the organizers of the event. You did a great job and I loved checking in for a dose of enthusiasm. I didn’t participate in any mini-challenges, I just read and sometimes stopped by other blogs to see how they were doing. But it was all such great fun and I look forward to doing it again.
Sounds like you had a great day. I skipped readathon last spring because I wasn’t in the mood for it at the time, but it is one of my favorite blogosphere events. I don’t usually have much trouble finding time to read either, but I do enjoy the communal aspect of readathon and the luxury of intentionally taking a whole day to read. I also love that anytime I wanted to take a quick reading break on Twitter, there were always folks around to chat with about the day.
I didn’t visit many blogs during the day. I finished three books, but one was half-done when the day began, and all three were quick reads. I was hoping to make a nice dent in my pile and I did.
I think you did fantastically well!
Your read-a-thon looked like a really enjoyable day. I may have to try mixing in magazines next time. That was a good idea. I always seem to have a stack of them lying around. I am also intrigued with this audiobook while moving idea.
I most envy you, but at the same time I think I wouldn’t be able to read 15 hours straight! Congratulations on your performance
Teresa, it is a treat taking a whole day to read and not feel guilty about it. I didn’t check in on Twitter at all. Maybe next time I will look in there.
Litlove, it was lots of fun!
Meghan, it was an enjoyable day. The magazines were a nice change of pace and each piece was all contained and short so it worked as a good alternative to books. The audiobook worked fantastically well. The perfect length and I still got to “read” while moving around. Will definitely be including an audiobook in future read-a-thons.
Smithereens, it wasn’t a solid 15 hours of reading but it was really decadent
That sounds like a really neat thing to do — I’ve never been part of a read-a-thon. I actually don’t think they would let me participate because I am an incredibly SLOW and EASILY DISTRACTED reader.
The one event that I annually participate in is a HUGE-NORMOUS used-book sale that takes place in my neighborhood. I think I have been there every year for over a decade now. I always donate a ton of books, all the proceeds go to this one elementary school in the area. For 50 or 60 bucks I can haul away a boxful of books that will barely fit in the trunk of my car. And it takes place two Fridays from now — I can hardly wait.
Sounds like a perfect way to spend the day. I think I’d rather spend time reading different books from my pile than trying to finish one entire book (unless it was really short)–too much pressure! Someday I’d love to try and join in–or at least have an abbreviated readathon!
