It was a wonderful weekend. My Bookman and I met some friends for breakfast and one of them presented me with this marvelous t-shirt
The shirt was created by librarians who were frustrated over government and police information fishing expeditions. The Latin translates, “We know what you read, and we’re not saying.” I love my friend!
After breakfast my Bookman and I went over to the downtown library where I used to volunteer. I haven’t been there since I resigned my volunteer position in August so it felt sort of weird. We went because there is a Post Secret exhibit. Talk about an intense experience! While there were some secrets that were happy or made us laugh, most of them were just plain heartbreaking. There is a lot of pain in the world and several times I dabbed away tears from my eyes. So many secrets about rape and being molested, so many people who want to die, feel worthless, and worry that no one will ever love them. It took about an hour to read all the cards. When we left both of us let out a big sigh of relief. It is one thing to see these cards on the internet or in the book, another thing entirely to see them in person. If you ever get the chance to see a Post Secret exhibit, I highly recommend going.
On the reading front, I finished The Last Free Cat by Jon Blake and enjoyed it. I will write up a proper review of it tomorrow. I began a new book called In the Land of Invisible Women by Qanta Ahmed. She is a doctor, a muslim, and a British citizen but was working in the U.S. when she finished some important residency program and she could not get her visa renewed so accepted a job she was offered in Saudi Arabia. Hers is a fascinating story. I also have Libation Bearers by Aeschylus to post about.
I also read the introduction to The Recognitions by William Gaddis. There are a few of us who are reading it together. If you are interested in reading it too, be sure to get in touch with the marvelous organizer, Litlove. She’ll soon be creating a little blog where we will all be discussing the book.
Now I must scurry off to get ready for the finale of Dancing With the Stars!
