You probably know by now that the Baileys Women’s Prize short list has been revealed. I am very excited to see The Portable Veblen has made the cut! I even ran outside and told all the squirrels. No, not really. I have not managed to move far enough past my squirrel animosity to be able to talk to them in a friendly manner yet. At the moment our conversations are limited to “Get off my deck you stupid squirrel!” and “Get out of my garden/stop eating that you stupid squirrel!” I have yet to understand what, if anything, they reply and I am not sure that I really want to know.

Why am I talking about squirrels in relation to The Portable Veblen? Because the main character in the book, Veblen, loves squirrels and talks to them and is convinced they tell her things too, that they even follow her around and keep an eye on her. I have not yet finished the book but as I have mentioned a few times before, I am enjoying it immensely. I have no idea how it compares to the other books on the list as I have read none of them nor have I heard of most of them.

This has been a banner Baileys Prize year for me because I am reading one of the short listed books and I read another of the books that made it onto the long list, Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. It is unfortunate it did not make the cut but, as much as I liked it, I am not surprised. It has a lot going for it but it is Chambers’ first book plus it is science fiction. That it made in onto the long list though is pretty awesome.

So, knowing absolutely nothing about the other books on the short list I am cheering for The Portable Veblen to win. Are you lucky enough to have read any of the books on the short list? Are you cheering for a particular title?

In just a couple of days the Man Booker International short list will be announced. Usually I have not read anything on that list either but this year I have read The Vegetarian and I liked it a whole lot. So fingers crossed it makes the cut!

Most of the time I don’t even talk about prizes, but see what happens when I have read some of the nominees? Don’t worry though, I wouldn’t count on or worry about this becoming a trend.

Now please excuse me while I go read some more Portable Veblen.
