Saga, a long story of heroic achievement. Also a long, involved story, account, or series of incidents (Google).
Saga the comic book series is just that. Or at least it will be. I just finished volume one and the story is set up in such a way that I am left with all sorts of unanswered questions and looking forward to finding out the answers. How could I ask for anything more?
The story begins with Alana and Marko, husband and wife, each from one side of warring factions in a conflict that has been “outsourced” to other worlds. It is a classic star-crossed lovers story with the addition of technology versus magic. Alana comes from a technologically advanced planet and Marko from a magic wielding one. The couple met when Alana was set to guard Marko in prison. The two escape and have been on the run ever since. Now they have baby Hazel to care for and raise in the midst of it all.
We don’t get the backstory of how they fell in love, how they managed to escape and what they have been doing up until the point of the birth of Hazel. I am hoping some of this gets filled in as the story progresses.
The art is fantastic and full-color and works to both supplement the text as well as move the story along on its own. Faces are wonderfully expressive. There are beautifully drawn depictions of Alana breastfeeding as well a blood and gore and some explicit robot sex.
Also there is a big blue cat who is the sidekick of a mercenary with a heart. The cat can tell if people are lying. A very useful companion to have, though I am glad my cats do not have this skill. At least not that I know of.
I have requested volume two from the library and it is currently making its way to me through the library transit system. Yay!
Yay! I’ve not yet read this but am so glad to know that you’re enjoying it. My library doesn’t have it so I’ll have to go interlibrary loan for this one. But it sounds awesome.

Laila, shame on your library for not having Saga. Glad you can ILL it though. I have the second volume now but haven’t had the chance to start it yet. This coming holiday weekend should be perfect.

I love Lying Cat! The explicit robot sex was — ahem, a surprise. I read the first volume of Saga when I was still living in New York, and in fact I tried to read it on the subway. Then I felt weird subjecting the people next to me to explicit robot sex, so I saved it for another time. But: Isn’t it wonderful? I am excited for you to read more!

Jenny, Lying Cat is great! And blue! I want a big blue cat! Ready to read volume 2 this coming holiday weekend and looking forward to it! I was surprised about the robots and of course my husband looks over my shoulder at that moment and got a surprise too! I am sure the good subway riders of NY have been subjected to far worse than explicit robot sex 😉

Never heard of this – sounds interesting. Lying cat sounds like a wonderful character. Big day for us in UK with EU referendum after a pretty nasty campaign. It looks like its going to be very close!

Great to see that Lying Cat is a Sphynx!

I need Lying Cat to stroke after the result of the wretched referendum – truly Cameron’s folly. An awful lot not to like the EU but we’ve had some pretty toxic English nationalism run riot to endure. On this result I expect Trump will win in November!

Ian, I feel for you and the vote turnout. What the heck? The news here is making things there sound pretty crazy and unstable right now I hope it isn’t as bad as is sounds! Though I have heard Scotland is going to have another vote to leave the UK. True? And if so, do you think it will pass this time? I must admit it is nice to have a distraction from American politics right now though I am sorry it’s at your expense!

I don’t think that Scotland really wants a referendum and the economic case for separation is not looking too good. But BREXIT has represented yet another victory for right wing populism and Nicola Sturgeon is right to attempt to address this democratic deficit.

Gitanadeneff, I am having a case of why did I wait so long to get around to reading this? And consoling myself with, at least there are lots in the series to binge on and I don;t have to wait after each volume 🙂

It’s weird because I’m not usually a comic book reader. So I was shocked that I read through them quickly. I was like, “is this how fast I’m supposed to go through these??” But yes you’re gonna love the rest of the series. It’s so well done.

That’s a good sign! I just finished volume 2 and loved it and now waiting on 3 from the library 🙂

Ah yes, cliffhangers. You will get more of the backstory in the second volume which I just read and will hopefully be on to the third one soon. I am so glad you liked this–I was wondering if you had had a chance to read it. Very addictive, isn’t it? I like Izabel the ghost babysitter. This story just cracks me up really since it is so outrageous, but that is the fun. It is pretty bloody really. I like Hazel, too, and can’t wait until she gets older–though she is telling the story in retrospective. It is all so irreverent! Hope you are having a great week off!

Danielle, that’s good to know about the backstory! I’m going to read it this holiday weekend so I should request volume 3 from the library now 🙂 Very addictive. I like Izabel too and looking forward to narrator Hazel and hoping she has some surprises to reveal!
