I’ve squeed several times these last couple of days. That sounds vaguely disturbing doesn’t it? Kind of like an embarrassing bodily accident happened. Squeeing excitedly in public could be embarrassing but at least it’s not smelly or messy.
There have been three squees to be more precise.
Squee one. I got an annoucement in the mail from the University of Minnesota about who will be doing the fall Esther Freier Endowed Lecture, a wonderful thing that is free and open to the public. I’ve seen Zadie Smith and Jeanette Winterson and a number of other stellar authors because of this lecture. So imagine the squee when I saw: Claudia Rankine and Marilynne Robinson in Conversation! It’s the evening of October 19th. Bookman has promised to pick me up directly at work with a traveling dinner so we can go camp out in order to get good seats. It is an unticketed event and seating is first come, first served.
Squee two. Margaret Atwood is doing comics! Angel Catbird was published earlier this month. Why did I not know this was going to happen before it happened? Why is the month half over and I do not have this? I was going to borrow it from the library but there is a long holds queue so I decided that since it is Atwood, who is among my top ten favorite writers, I am going to buy my own copy.
Squee three. Squirrel Girl might be coming to TV! Rumor has it that a new show called New Warriors is being shopped around. The show is about a team of junior Avengers whose roster included Doreen Green, aka Squirrel Girl! She kicks butts and eats nuts! How fun is that going to be!
I am sure you will agree these things are all squee worthy!
What has made you squee lately?
I love the idea of the ‘Squee’ — which makes me want to “Squee with Glee” 😉

I squeed when I found out that Hilary Mantel is coming to Kenyon, where I work. And I squeed today when Dorianne Laux re-tweeted my tweet about the post with her poem in it, “The Secret of Backs”!

Jeanne, oh that is truly squee worthy! I just squeed on your behalf. You must do a post about Mantel’s visit. And totally awesome about the re-tweet!

I did have a bit of a squee when I saw one of my favourite movies one early morning a couple of weeks ago on TV. I hadn’t seen A Place In the Sun, Hollywood’s take on Dreiser’s American Tragedy, for years. That cast – Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelley Winters- was so awesome. She kicks butts and eats nuts – I love it!

Ian, You know, I don’t think I have ever seen that movie. I will have to see if I can get ahold of it sometime.

All very squee worthy events! I love the sound of the University of MN lecture! Nothing very squee worthy in my life this week but I am always optimistic and the weekend is coming and I *think* nice weather. That’s always something worth squee-ing about in my book!

I heard those squeeze all the way across the Atlantic? I Had my own little moment after seeing the programme for a literary festival not too far away and realising it was on the same date as my wedding anniversary. So I can pretend to my other half that I’m taking him away for the weekend as a treat, th fact there is a big tent in town with writers talking is pure coincidence

Bookertalk, heh, yeah they were pretty loud 😉 How fun that there will be a literary festival nearby! And how devious of you to combine it with your anniversary. I hope you and your husband both have a great time!

Good squees. My squee was when David Marr was announced as the speaker for this year’s Seymour Biography Lecture (and the squee proved to be justified – it was great). Other than that, I don’t want to be a Debbie Downer, but there haven’t been many squees lately BUT more will come. Meanwhile, you enjoy all yours – and I hope there are more on the way.

Laila, So glad you are enjoying Squirrel Girl! She is a hoot and I love how it’s both silly and serious at the same time and there is no superhero angst either. Sometimes I get tired of the angst 🙂

THE SQUIRREL GIRL NEWS FOR SURE! My only desire is that they not cast someone as Squirrel Girl who’s super skinny. Anna Kendrick has been saying she wants to play the role, and she is both too old and too skinny. CAST A FAT CHICK AS SQUIRREL GIRL 2K16!!
LikeLike
Jenny, yes! Squirrel Girl definitely has to be curvy! Squirrels are not skinny runty things! Anna Kendrick is definitely too skinny. It’d be nice if the actor is a relative unknown.
