I haven’t managed a Shout it Out Monday in a while and I just began reading Salman Rushdie’s The Golden House and wow! is it good. Actually, I have no idea yet if the story is good, but the writing, oh so smooth and creamy. So I have to share a piece with you – a Friday Find!
What is a good life? What is its opposite? These are questions to which no two men will give the same answers. In these our cowardly times, we deny the grandeur of the Universal, and assert and glorify our local Bigotries, and so we cannot agree on much. In these our degenerate times, men bent on nothing but vainglory and personal gain — hollow, bombastic men for whom nothing is off-limits if it advances their petty cause — will claim to be great leaders and benefactors, acting in the common good, and calling all who oppose them liars, envious, little people, stupid people, stiffs, and, in a precise reversal of the truth, dishonest and corrupt. We are so divided, so hostile to one another, so driven by sanctimony and scorn, so lost in cynicism, that we call our pomposity idealism, so disenchanted with out rulers, so willing to jeer at the institutions of our state, that the very word goodness has been emptied of meaning and needs, perhaps, to be set aside for a time, like all the other poisoned words, spirituality, for example, final solution, for example, and (at least when applied to skyscrapers and fried potatoes) freedom.
The writing is smooth but the sentiments are sharp. This is shaping up to be a delicious book.

I have read both The Satanic verses as well as Midnight’s Children and loved them both. Among other things, I found Rushdie’s writing to be superb. I am curious what you ultimately think of this one when you are finished. I do want to read this.

Brian Joseph, I have never read Satanic Verse but I have read a couple others including Midnight’s Children which is so very good. As I get deeper into this one I am enjoying it more and more. Lots of sly humor!

Wow!
I’ve read at least three Rushdies, including Midnight’s children, and the glorious Haroun and the sea of stories. He’s a great writer I agree.

whisperinggums, oh Haroun and the Sea of Stories is such a wonderful book! I think of Rushdie as being so serious but The Golden House reminds me once again that the man is also very funny.

AH!!! I have the book and can’t wait to start reading. It’s very relevant and Rushdie- a master of words. Did you know that he was largely influenced by James Joyce?

wanderwolf, no, I didn’t know he was influenced by Joyce! A very interesting tidbit, that!

We are twinsies!! I just started reading it too! I was not expecting much, because Rushdie’s last book let me down somewhat in terms of the playfulness of the writing, but The Golden House is right back on form. I’m so excited to read the rest of it.

I had this book in my hands but didn’t have time to read it and had to return it to the library. But yes, I did see this paragraph though, and you’re absolutely right, Rushdie’s writing is eloquent and sharp. I’d enjoyed Midnight’s Children. Will definitely get back to this one in the future.
