Is our progress as a society to be measured by how big our sport utility vehicles are? Or is our progress measured by the fact that we have a 72-inch wide plasma TV in the living room with 300 channels of programming? Is it progress to be able to buy a 40-ounce “Big Buddy” soft drink at every corner and have a Walmart store within 30 miles of every citizen?

I would say this is not progress at all. Thanks for posting this. Carry on Stefanie, things must change. Maybe we are on the cusp? Hope so.

Agreed Valorie. In fact it seems rather like regression. I am not sure if we are on the cusp yet, but I feel sometimes that we are getting closer.

Definitely not! Technology and innovation are necessary but our life mustn’t depend on it or be dictated by it right

Absolutely in agreement with you on that! Sadly, I think a great many people are addicted to technology, innovation and mindless entertainment in general.

True! And then there are others 🙂 May be it won’t be bad.

Very valid questions. I think the issue is not so much is “progress” measured but “success”. I guess they are related, but at the personal level I think these things are how people measure their success, while perhaps, as the quote suggests, this then translates more widely to societal measures. Am I making sense?
