Robert Jordan was born in 1948 in Charleston, South Carolina. He earned a degree in physics from The Citadel, the military college of South Carolina, and served two years as an officer in the U.S. Army. He taught himself history and began writing fiction while he was still at university. He died on September 16th 2007 after battling cancer for three years.
