E.B. White was born in 1899 in Mount Vernon, New York. He spent most of his childhood on a farm near Washington, D.C., and later attended Cornell University where he met his wife, Katharine Sergeant Angell White. The Whites shared a love of nature and rural living which would strongly influence E.B.’s writing career; first as a contributor to the New Yorker magazine starting in 1927, then as an author of children’s books beginning with Stuart Little (1945). Charlotte’s Web was published in 1952 and won the prestigious Caldecott Medal for illustration two years later – an award only given to picture books considered exceptional artistic achievement by American librarians.
