Frank Herbert was born in Tacoma, Washington on October 8, 1920. He worked as a reporter and editor for several West Coast newspapers before serving in the United States Navy during World War II. Afterward he became a political speechwriter and public relations consultant. In 1952, while employed by the Shell Oil Company in California, Herbert began writing science fiction stories. The Dune series is his most famous work; it has sold more than twelve million copies worldwide and been translated into twenty-one languages. Frank Herbert died on February 11, 1986.
