Patrick O’Brian was born in Ireland in 1914 and spent his childhood there, before moving to England when he was sixteen. After attending Oxford University, he served as a doctor in the Royal Navy during World War II. In 1945, he married Judy Runham and they had two children together. O’Brian began writing novels in the 1960s and achieved great success with his Aubrey/Maturin series of books about a British naval officer and his friend, a physician-turned-spy. The series spanned twenty volumes over two decades; the final installment was published shortly after O’Brian’s death from cancer at age seventy-eight.
