Robert Jordan was born in 1948 in Charleston, South Carolina. He taught himself to read when he was four years old, and by the time he was six he had a large vocabulary and an interest in grammar. In junior high school, Jordan wrote a novella-length science fiction story. After graduating from The Citadel military college with a degree in English, he became an insurance salesman. Jordan began writing full-time after his first book was published in 1984. Wheel of Time is his major achievement thus far; it currently consists of fourteen volumes (of which Path of Daggers is volume 8), plus three prequel novels). Jordan died on September 16th 2007 after battling cardiac amyloidosis for more than two years.
