J.R.R. Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He served as a lieutenant in the British Army during World War I and was decorated for bravery before returning to England in 1918 to pursue his education at Oxford University. There he began writing The Hobbit and other stories set in the world of Middle-earth, which were published posthumously after his death from complications following a bone infection in September 1973.
