John Steinbeck was born in 1902 in Salinas, California. He worked as a laborer and journalist before publishing his first novel, Cup of Gold, in 1929. During the 1930s he wrote some of America’s most important social novels, including The Grapes of Wrath (1939), which won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. In 1961 he traveled across America with his dog Charley for the book Travels with Charley: In Search of America, which was published the following year.
